In order to understand what type of fire extinguisher is most suitable for your needs, you need to know how fires are classed.

CLASS A FIRES

Class A fires involve ordinary materials such as burning paper, lumber, cardboard, plastics, etc. The extinguishers used most for these kinds of fires are ABC and Water.

CLASS B FIRES

Class B fires involve flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene and common organic solvents used in a laboratory. Extinguishers appropriate for these kinds of fires include ABC, BC and CO2. Water extinguishers are not appropriate for these fires as the water will cause the fire to spread.

CLASS C FIRES

Class C fires involve energized electrical equipment such as appliances, switches, panel boxes, power tools, hot plates and stirrers. Water is a particularly dangerous medium for extinguishing Class C fires because of the risk of electrical shock. Therefore, the most common extinguishers used for Class C fires are ABC, BC and FE-36.

CLASS D FIRES

Class D fires involve combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium as well as organic metallic reagents such as alkyl lithiums, Grignards and diethyl zinc. These materials burn at high temperatures and will react violently with water or other chemicals. CO2 extinguishers are not appropriate Class D fires because the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) will react with the fire. The best choice of an extinguisher for this type of fire is Metalex.

Dry Chemical extinguishes (ABC, BC) are your best all around choice. They have an advantage over CO2 extinguishers in that they leave a blanket of non-flammable material on the extinguished material, which reduces the likelihood of reignition. Because FE-36 extinguishers do not leave behind any residue, they may be favoured when it comes to dealing with delicate equipment.

Layman Fire & Safety will ensure that you have the proper extinguisher for your residential or commercial needs.
